[Tools & Resources]
At CIL we make it our mission to help people lead more independent lives by creating accessibility. One of the ways we do this is through our AccesSolutions, a program that helps provide a variety of mobility improving home modifications and specialized equipment to people with disabilities who cannot afford them.
Global Accessibility Awareness Day is a time to get everyone talking, thinking, learning, and recognizing the steps we all need to take towards creating a world where people with disabilities have what they need to thrive.
To celebrate, we are sharing some ideas on how to make a home more accessible!
Improvements for the Home:
- Ditch the doorknobs & replace with press lever handles or an automatic door opener
- Rearrange your furniture to have no sharp turns or narrow passageways
- Install rocker or touch light switches
- Be mindful of your surfaces; thick rugs & rough grout can be hard for those using mobility devices. Ensure surfaces do not pose any tripping or slipping threats
Improvements for the Kitchen:
- Arrange appliances near the sink and counters to make tasks easier to perform
- Consider replacing sink faucet with levered or motion-sensor handles
- Create under-counter seated work areas for ease of good preparation
- Carefully choose appliances for ease of use such as a side-by-side fridge & freezer, a dishwasher with push button controls, and a microwave at countertop height
Improvements for the Bathroom:
- Eliminate bathroom obstacles such as slick tiles and tubs with slides
- Install a shower bench or fold down seat for further support while bathing
- Choose detachable & adjustable shower heads with at least a six-inch reach
- Install grab bars, toilet risers, and line tub with a slip-resistant surface
Improvements for the Bedroom:
- Lower closet rods to make it easier to reach clothing
- Install interior lift & grab bars
- Use a lower to the ground bed frame
- Consider using rocker or touch light switches
